A fantastic time was had by all at this year’s summer activity for the families. Our all-day event at the Caldecotte Xperience included a range of water sports activities as well as zorbing, climbing and archery. Lunch and a BBQ dinner was also enjoyed by the 22 families that attended.
Watching the smiles on the children’s faces as they fell in the lake or took a ride in the speed boat was the highlight for us, as well as watching the children interact with each other and make new friends.
The purpose of these family trips is not only to facilitate contact with the beneficiaries to combat the loneliness felt when grieving for a parent or a sibling but also to help the children we support aged 0-18 years, to improve their confidence and self-esteem which all helps to build the resilience needed to deal with their grief and feelings. Some of the children had to overcome fears to climb higher or even go on the water, and seeing how proud they were of themselves really showed the difference these trips make.
The youth group (teens aged 12+) also stayed overnight in a yurt and undertook additional sports activities including sailing and paddle boating, as well as toasting marshmallows and chatting around the camp fire. Some even helped to made breakfast in the morning. Giving them this opportunity enabled them to forge stronger friendships with both their peers and our support workers and Family Liaison Officer.
It’s important that all our beneficiaries understand that there is a support network around them and that they can access it for as long as they need to.
We were delighted to have been awarded a grant by The Big Lottery which enabled the event to go ahead. We’d also like to thank Action for Youth at the Caldecotte Xperience for working with us to facilitate the activities and of course our wonderful team of volunteers and support workers, without which these events would be very difficult to manage.
