Due to Covid, our face to face groups had to stop last year. Since then we have enjoyed online groups as a space to connect to others and enjoy an activity. The activities had to be simple and only use paper and pen so that everyone could join in, our arts and crafts facilitator, Donna, came up with new activities each month and these were enjoyed by all. We also have had games of bingo, a scavenger hunt and some dancing! One session the children had a story read to them and we also had Whipsnade zoo let us virtually meet some animals too.
The sessions evolved over time as we all learnt how to be online and what worked for us. One example of this is jokes. We had a few jokes told in one session and everyone left feeling so happy that it became a regular occurrence. At the end of each group, the children (and adults!) shared some jokes with each other, this became a real joyful time and the children came prepared with joke books and jokes they had found!
Now that restrictions are easing, these groups have now come to an end. The word cloud we created with our beneficiaries describes how they felt about the groups. It is heart-warming to see such positivity from everyone and demonstrates how needed and enjoyed these groups were.
Our final group was a special one, we held a beach party with the children (and their parents) really making an effort to decorate, accessorise and join in. We had mocktails, ice lollies, ice creams, sunglasses, inflatables, flower lei and beach towels on show! We played games and designed our own sandcastles, we shared jokes and a special poem was read out to mark the end of our time online together. Every child who has attend one of our online sessions was provided with a bookmark with that poem on to allow them to remember the time they all shared together.
