Founder and CEO Odette took on the challenge of running the London Marathon this year. The place was given to her back in June 2020, when at that time the marathon was due to go ahead in April 2021. Due to the covid pandemic it was re scheduled for October 2021 and during that 16 month period Odette ran 159 times, making the marathon her 160th run. Odette set herself a fundraising target of £2000 but was well aware that as founder of the charity, built in memory of her son, she may find it difficult to reach the target, having taken on previous challenges through the years.
At the last check Odette has surpassed this target reaching almost £2800. We want to thank Odette for her dedication to this challenge.
Odette’s own social media posts about the day are documented here.
What an amazing day! I have received endless support from my family, the Harry’s Rainbow family and all of the spectators and volunteers along the marathon course!
Not to mention all those who’ve sponsored me I’m shattered but am so pleased with my time.
In all honesty I started out too quick and I knew this but couldn’t manage to slow down, I was being taken by the crowd and runners and quite frankly enjoying the experience, but knowing I’ll pay later.
Which I did! My mileage slowed a little and as much as I tried, I couldn’t replenish the energy I had lost in the first half. Anything I tried to take ( gel, jelly baby) made me feel sick!
The last 2 miles were tough but I remembered my WHY and did not stop! I felt like I stopped but I didn’t. And there was no sprint finish.
In fact shortly after crossing the finish I came over faint and sick so didn’t get the chance to collect my kit bag and medal before I was carted to St. John’s where they replenished my lost salt, warmed me up and when I left I was able to string more than 2 words together to greet my family.
When I finally got to look at my phone on the train and saw how my family, friends and the Rainbow family had been supporting me all day I felt even more amazing and proud.
We finished the day with Chinese and champagne.
2 days post London Marathon and I’m feeling absolutely no anti-climax. I feel so proud and accomplished in what I have achieved. I put my all in and could have given no more. I am certainly feeling the after effects in blisters and aches but they are worth it ( I think!)
I want to thank everyone that supported me on this journey. I received so many messages of luck and I’m utterly overwhelmed by how many of you were following my progress, in anticipation.
Thank you to Harry’s Rainbow for entrusting this place to me, thank you to my sponsors Amina’s Flavours and Walnut Tree Leather for your continued support, thankyou to my running buddies and to the best gym, energie Fitness Kiln Farm.
I am in utter awe at those who constantly run marathons. I believe my marathon journey is over with me feeling like I have accomplished what I set out to do.
Time for some rest before deciding what challenge I’ll move onto next!
