This month, we have had a mix of Rainbow Groups, Youth Groups and Peer Groups. Through this we have supported over 50 children, offering them the chance to meet up with peers and have some fun as well as learning some tools they can use for their emotions.
The Rainbow Group families made mindfulness wands, enjoyed board games and shared some food. They take the opportunity to catch up with each other, as well as chat with the volunteers.
The youth groups started up with seperate groups this month for the first time. We decided to do this based on feedback from the families, they now cater for school years 7 – 11, with years 7 – 9 in one group, and years 10 – 11 in another. The group for years 7 – 9 are now run by Carol, someone who has helped in a variety of roles at Harry’s Rainbow over many years. She has a lot of experience with this age group and enjoyed doing some ‘getting to know you’ bingo with the teens, as well as allowing them to play table football, table tennis and large connect 4. The teens had fun and started to make some good connections.
The other youth group, for years 10 – 12 are run by Arthur Ellis, this group touched on anniversaries and the teens enjoyed sharing knowledge and experiences around this subject, offering each other support and understanding whilst also learning some new techniques and tips that may help them.
The peer group offers the opportunity for all families registered with us to meet up, have a drink and some cake, play some games and catch up with each other. This is a lovely chance for families to meet others in a similar situation, share what they have learnt from their bereavement journey and just relax.
All these groups could not take place without the ongoing support of the volunteers who give their time to ensure that the families all get the chance to access this support.
