This time of year can be especially difficult for our grieving families. As a charity, we like to offer special events that can support them, allow them to acknowledge those feelings, but also have some fun too. One way we do this is via our Christmas Celebration day.
This year over 100 of our beneficiaries (with over 60 children in that figure) came to the celebration. We offered a quieter space that allowed the families to light a candle and write a memory of / message to their loved one. We also had memorial Christmas decorations to colour in, reindeer food to make and a photographer doing some family photos for us.
In a noisier space we had Santa’s Grotto where children could meet the big man himself and be treated with a present. There was a lot of yummy food on offer, as well as some board games to play. Later in the day our fabulous Rainbow Choir arrived to lead us is a singalong that Santa could not resist getting involved with too!
All the families enjoyed themselves, with comments such as
“Thank you so much. Some lovely activities to complete along side one another, plus a comedic Santa (my child thought he was very funny!!).”
“Thank you for having us today. It was really nice catching up with others. Merry Christmas to everyone.”
These events are vital to allow the families the time and space to reflect, connect and enjoy some fun without the usual pressures that come with this time of year. We would like to say a massive thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who gave up a weekend day to support these families and allow them to access this event, as well as Tea-cup pictures for the photos, Tracey The Sandwich Lady for the Food and Bouncy Macs for the wonderful grotto and supporting accessories.
